Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a mold additive for casting which is suited for continuous casting and for which amorphous carbon-contg. calcium silicate is used as an effective component by mixing lime-contg. materials, silicic acid-contg. materials, and carbon materials, heating the mixture to melt in a reducing atmosphere and cooling the same quickly. CONSTITUTION:Lime-contg. materials such as quicklime, silicic acid-contg. materials such as silica rock, fluorine-contg. materials such as sodium fluoride, and carbon materials such as coke are mixed in such a way that the melt compsn. of lime, silica, and fluorine contg. components attain (1-1.4)CaO.SiO2.(0.05-1.5)F. After such composition is heated to melt in a reducing atmosphere, it is cooled quickly. The amt. of the carbon materials in this mixture is about 0.1-5wt%. It is so formulated that the impurities of the iron and alumina components originating from raw materials are contained at least at 10% in terms of R2O3 in the product. According to this method, the mold additive for casting which is suited for high speed continuous casting of steel and for which amorphous carbon-contg. and fluorine-contg. calcium silicate is used as an effective component is obtained.
