Abstract
PURPOSE: To dimerize an org. compd. electrolytically in a low voltage by forming a gas and liquid permeable porous layer having no electrode activity on at least one surface of a cation exchange membrane segmenting an anode and a cathode.
CONSTITUTION: A porous layer may be conductive or non-conductive, may be org. or inorg., is preferably hydrophilic and is obtained by sticking a material selected frm single substances and alloys of periodic table IVA group, IVB group, VB group, iron group metals, chromium, manganese, etc. on a cation exchange membrane. These materials are preferably about 0.01W300μ grain sizes, and is used together with a binder and a thickener. The contents of the particles forming the porous layers are about 0.05W30mg/cm2. The porous later to be formed on the membrane surface is of 10W99% porosity and 0.01W200μ thickness, and a fluorine contg. polymer having sulfonic acid groups, carboxylic acid groups or phosphoric acid groups is used for the cation exchange membrane.
