Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a cation exchange membrane which can electrolyze an aq. soln. with the load voltage as low as possible, by providing a porous layer formed by binding conductive or non-conductive microfibers on the surface of said cation exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: A gas and liquid permeable porous layer is provided on the surface of a cation exchange membrane in contact with anode and/or cathode. This porous layer is constituted of conductive or non-conductive microfibers of preferably 0.01W50μ diameters and 0.1W300μ lengths. The pickup of the microfibers on the membrane surface is 0.001W50mg per unit cm2 of the membrane surface. Metallic fibers, carbon fibers, org. polymer fibers are satisfactorily usable for the microfibers. Further, said porous layer formed on the membrane surface is adequately formed to ≥10% porosities and 0.01W200μ thicknesses. A membrane consisting of a fluorine-polymer having carboxylic acid groups, sulfonic acid, groups, etc. is preferable for the cation exchange membrane.
