Abstract
PURPOSE: To drop the voltage of an electrolytic cell for an aqueous soln. of alkali halide by using a specified substance as a binder for a porous layer when an electrode is formed of the porous layer bonded to an ion exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: In an electrolytic cell used to manufacture Cl and NaOH by the electrolysis of an aqueous soln. of NaCl at least one of the anode and the cathode is set through an electrode activity of gas and liq. permeable porous layer bonded to a surface of an ion exchange membrane. The layer has 0.01W2,000μm average pore diameter and 10W99% porosity, or the same having no said electrode activity is also available. At this time, modified polytetrafluoroethylene prepared by copolymerizing a fluorine monomer contg. an acid type functional group as a modifier is used as a binder. This binder has superior bonding strength to the membrane and the electrode, the voltage of the cell can be dropped, and the consumption of electric power is reduced.
