Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover metallic Ti from titanium-grinding sludge as ferrotitaium by an effective and inexpensive method by cleaning the sludge followed by compression molding and dissolution in iron in an Ar atmoaphere.
CONSTITUTION: Titanium-grinding sludge discharged in a process of manufacturing a titanium plate contains much water and much oil and fat which lower the Ti recovering rate as an exygen generating source and invite the danger of exlosion when the sludge is added to molten iron. In addition, they increase the viscosity of molten ferrotitanium and remarkably hinder the ingot making work. Accordingly, the sludge is well degreased with a detergent or an org. solvent by means of a mixer, an ultrasonic washing machine or the like, dehydrated, and dried with warm air at ≤ about 300°C or by heating with an infrared lamp or in a vacuum so as to avoid the ingnition of chipped or powdered sludge due to intense heating. The sludge is then compression-molded to enchance the work efficiency, and a necessary amount of the sludge compact is added to iron melted in a melting furnace in an Ar atmosphere. After finishing dissolution the resulting molten alloy is cast in a mold quickly.
