Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the dispersion of the polarized wave without imparing the polarizing characteristics, by connecting the single polarized wave optical fibers which are used for the coherent transmission system, etc. by aligning the main axes of the optical fibers after defining the total length of the optical fiber having a large degree of dispersion of the polarized wave under a specific relation. CONSTITUTION:The oval core optical fibers 4 and 5 are formed by enclosing an oval core 2 with a cladding 1 having a uniform refractive index. The delay times tau11 and tau21 are set to the beams polarized toward the axes (x) and (y) of the fiber 4, and the fiber length is set at L1. The delay times tau12 and tau22 are set to the beams polarized toward the axes (x) and (y) of the fiber 5, and the fiber length is set at L2. Furthermore the sum of (tau11-tau21)XL1 and (tau12-tau22)X L2 is set zero. Such fibers 4 and 5 are connected to each other with their main axes aligned together. In such way, the dispersion of the polarized wave can be minimized without imparing the polarizing characteristics. The asymmetrical cladding optical fibers or the fibers of different types can be connected in the same way as mentioned above.
