Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic scale with high resolution by performing short- wavelength recording and reproduction, by making the scale of a vertically magnetized recording medium, and constituting a magnetic head by a magnetic resistance effect element formed by a thin-film depositing method. CONSTITUTION:A scale 11 is formed by providing a lower magnetic layer 2 made of a soft magnetic material such as 78% Ni-Fe ''Permalloy '' and an upper magnetic layer 3 of a hard magnetic material such as 80% Co-Cr alloy on a base 1; the lower magnetic layer 2 has magnetic anisotropy in parallel to a surface, and the upper magnetic layer 3 has magnetic anisotropy at right angles to the surface. On this scale 11, magnetic recording is performed by a magnetic head on a vertical magnetic recording system. A reproducing head 20 is formed by giving a substrate 23 magnetic anisotropy at right angles to the running direction of a magnetic recording medium and then forming a magnetic resistance effect element 25 by a thin-film depositing method such as vapor deposition and sputtering.
