Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the effect of pulsation of intake flow and exhaust flow on the fuel-air ratio in introducing secondary air to at least either the intake system or the exhaust system of an engine through an air supply passage by providing a read valve within the air supply passage for introducing secondary air at a downstream position with respect to an air control valve.
CONSTITUTION: During low-load operation of an engine, a high negative pressure at a negative pressure port 17 is applied to the negative pressure chamber 16d of a transfer valve 16. Consequently, a valve element 15 closes an intake port 16a and opens an exhaust port 16d. A computer 11 controls an air control valve 6 on the basis of the output signal provided by an oxygen sensor 10 so as to supply secondary air of a quantity necessary to maintain a predetermined fuel-air ratio requried by the catalizer contained in a catalytic converter 19 to a valve chamber 16g via passages 8 and 22. The secondary air supplied into the valve chamber is sucked into the exhaust manifold 9 via a reed valve element 3b which is repeatedly opened and closed by the pulsation of the exhaust gas. On the other hand, during middle-load operation of the engine, both ports 16a and 16b are opened so that the secondary air is supplied to the intake pipe 7 via the reed valve element 3a.
