Abstract

PURPOSE: The oxidation of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol in the presence of a kind of phenolic compound gives the titled compound used as an intermediate of 2,3, 6-trimethylhydroquinone (an antioxidant) in epochally increased selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: 2,4,6-Trimethylphenol is oxidized in the presence of a compound of the formula (R1WR5 are H, lower alkyl), where 2,4,6-trimethylphenol is excluded, to give the objective compound. The oxidation reaction is effected by bringing 2,4,6-trimethylphenol dissolved or suspended in a liquid medium such as water, methanol or benzene into contact with an oxygen gas or oxygen- containing gas or by dropping hydrogen peroxide, preferably under alkaline conditions at 0W80°C for 10 minutes to 5 hours. The amount of the compound of the formula is preferably 0.1W5.0 moles per mole of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol.
