Abstract

PURPOSE: The oxidation of 1,1-ditolylethane with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a radical initiator and a specific amount of an alkali is followed by decomposition with an acid to give title compound econimically in high yield that is used as synthetic intermediate of perfume and agricultural chemical.
CONSTITUTION: 1,1-Ditolylethane is formed from inexpensive toluene and acetaldehyde using sulfuric acid. The product is oxidized with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a radical initiator as peroxide, e.g., cumene hydroperoxide, or azo compound, e.g., azoisobutyronitrile and 0.01W10wt%, based on 1,1- ditolylethane, of an alkali as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or potassium hydroxide at a temperature of 80W150°C. The resulting hydroperoxide of 1,1-ditolylethane is decomposed with an acid to give p-methylacetophenone with high selectivity and simultaneously p-cresol.
