Abstract
PURPOSE: An isopropyl-substituted benzene is oxidized in liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst of pyridine hydrobromide that is easy-to-handle to produce title compound in short times in high selectivity and yield without ignition caused by contact with air.
CONSTITUTION: An isopropyl-substituted benzene such as cumene, cymene or diisopropylbnezene is oxidized in liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas at 30W 200°C under pressure in the presence of a pyridine hydrobromide to produce the objective compound such as cumene hydroperoxide. The catalyst used is, e.g., pyridine hydrobromide, picoline hydrobromide, lutidine hydrobromide or bipyridene hydrobromide. In order to shorten the induction period of the liquid phase exidation, the addition of a small amount of a reaction initiator such as benzoyl peroxide is preferred.
