Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify anthraquinone, by oxidizing a crude anthraquinone obtained by oxidizing a Diels-Alder reaction adduct of 1,4-naphthoquinone with butadiene in an aqueous medium in the presence of chlorine dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: A Diels-Alder reaction adduct of 1,4-naphthoquinone with butadiene is oxidized with molecular oxygen in an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali to give crude anthraquinone, which is then purified. In the process, the crude anthraquinone is oxidized in an aqueous medium in the presence of chlorine dioxide, and water-insoluble impurities are made soluble in water and removed to afford the anthraquinone of high purity. The color tone of the resultant anthraquinone is yellow. The amount of the oxidizing agent chlorine dioxide to be used is 0.5W30%, preferably 1W5%.
USE: A digestion assistant of pulp, intermediates for dyes, etc.
