Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain acetone from a hydrocarbon containing mesityl oxide formed as a by-product in production of phenol through the cumene method effectively, by using an alkali waste liquor from acetone purification process.
CONSTITUTION: Acetone is obtained by mixing a hydrocarbon containing mesityl oxide, acetone condensate, formed as by-product in production of phenol through the cumene method with an alkali waste liquor discharge from acetone purification process at a temperature ranging from 80W150°C for 10 min or longer. The concentration of the alkali, e.g. caustic soda, etc. in the waste liquor is usually ≥ 0.05wt.%. In order to incease the conversion of mesityl oxide to acetone, a longer time is required with decreasing alkali concentration and temperature. The acetone thus formed is separated from the alkali waste liquor by distillation.
