Abstract

PURPOSE: To decrease the uncorrectable probability of data word, by recording only the redundant word to the track closest to the edge side when the digital signals obtained through the pulse modulation are distributed and recorded to a number of tracks of a magnetic tape along with the redundant word.
CONSTITUTION: The number of data words within the signals of a frame is defined as (n); the total number of error correcting words P and Q is (j); and the number of tracks which are simultaneously recorded and produced is (k) respectively. Then (n) units of data words within a frame in a certain track is set equal to the total number (k-1)×3 of the correcting words of (j) units for each frame to be recorded to the residual (k-1) pieces of tracks. In such relationship, the data words of a track can be replaced with the error correcting words of (k-1) pieces of residual tracks. As a result, a track TO exclusive for the redundant word is set and recorded as a track that is closest to the edge of a magnetic tape. In such way, the uncorrectable probability is reduced in case when the recording/reproducing performance is greatly lowered for the tracks near the edge of the magnetic tape.
