Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve combustibility of fuel in a swirl chamber and to thereby lower the fuel consumption of a Diesel engine of the type in which a swirl chamber and a main combustion chamber formed in the cylinder head are communicated to each other via a main and a subsidiary injection port, by shaping the swirl chamber in a flat cylindrical form with the main injection port being opened in a tangential direction of the swirl chamber. CONSTITUTION:A swirl-chamber type Diesel engine of this invertion comprises a swirl chamber 1 formed between a cylinder head 2 and a muouth ring 3 fitted to the lower surface of the cylinder head 2. The swirl chamber 1 is communicated to a main combustion chamber 6 via a main injection port 4 and a subsidiary injection port 5 having a relatively small diameter. Here, the main injection port 4 is opened tangentially of the swirl chamber 1 at one end 4A thereof located on the side of the swirl chamber 1, while the subsidiary injection port 5 is opened in parallel with the direction in which fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 7 facing the swirl chamber 1. In the above arrangement, the swirl chamber 1 is shaped in a flat cylindrical form, whereby it is enabled to promote combustion of fuel by imparting strong directivity to the swirl produced by a forced flow of mixture gas introduced into the swirl chamber 1 from the main port 4 by the guide of side planes 1B, 1C.
