Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish complete combustion of mixture in an internal combustion engine, by promoting evaporation of fuel by bringing fuel supplied to the first combustion chamber into contact with the high-temperature wall portion of the said first combustion chamber, mixing this evaporated fuel and air by the function of swirl, and causing ignition of mixture substantially at the center of said swirl.
CONSTITUTION: The second combustion chamber 20 having a small capacity is defined by recess 17 formed in the upper surface of piston 16, cylinder 13 and cylinder head 11, and the first combustion chamber 10 having a large capacity is formed upwardly of the second combustion chamber 20 in the manner that it is communicated with the second combustion chamber 20 through connecting port 19. This connecting port 19 is arranged such that its axis is extended tangentially to the inner wall 22 of combustion chamber 10 and that air introduced from the second combustion chamber 20 via connecting port 19 into the first combustion chamber 10 causes swirl in chamber 10. In the first combustion chamber 10, ignition plug 5 is disposed such that its ignition point 50 is located substantially at the center of the said swirl, and there is further provided a fuel injection valve 25 which ejects under pressure a required amount of fuel in a wide injection angle of about 90°W 120°.
