Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent generation of noxious substances such as HC due to incomplete combustion of fuel, by bringing fuel into contact with the high-temperature wall surface portion of combustion chamber by a fuel supplying means for evaporating the fuel, and accomplishing highly efficient combustion of fuel by thus promoting evaporation of fuel.
CONSTITUTION: When intake valve 5 is opened as piston 2 is lowered after starting of the suction stroke of engine, liquid spray of fuel supplied from carburetor 70 is drawn into combustion chamber 4 via intake passage IP. A cylindrical recess 32 is formed in the upper wall surface of combustion chamber 4, so that head 50 of intake valve 5 is located at a retracted position when it is fully closed. With such an arrangement, mixture of air and fuel spray introduced into combustion chamber 4 through gap 33 is formed into jet stream S and collides onto the surface of W- shaped recess 21 formed on the upper surface 20 of piston 2. Thus, liquid prticales in the mixture are held in area contact with the surface of W-shaped recess 21 and evaporated at the upper surface 20 of piston 2 which is heated to about 200W300°C. Fuel thus evaporated is then ignited by ignition plug 6.
