Abstract

PURPOSE: To cause laminar combustion effectively, by disposing a fuel injection valve in the intake pipe at a position spaced from the intake valve in the manner that it is directed toward a subsidiary chamber, and causing injection of fuel from said fuel injection valve at least once during suction stroke of engine.
CONSTITUTION: As intake valve 7 is lowered during suction stroke of engine, lean mixture is at first introduced into main chamber 4 via intake pipe 5 and also into subsidiary chamber 8 via inlet port 9. When intake valve 7 is opened sufficiently, there is caused such a positional relationship that valve 12 has an unobstructed view toward inlet port 9, so that fuel is supplied directly into subsidiary chamber 8. Subsequently, when compression stroke is started with closing of intake valve 7 and rising of piston 3, gas in chamber 8 is compressed and fuel located therein is evaporated so that rich mixture is formed locally in chamber 8. With subsequent igningition of ignition plug 11, rich mixture in chamber 8 is at first explosed and combusted, and then lean mixture in main chamber 4 is combusted by the flame.
