Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the combustion efficiency in the swirl chamber type engines by such arrangement that the angle between the axis of a sub-chamber jet and the plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder axis is made theta1 at the end of the main combustion chamber opening and theta2 at the end of the subcombustion chamber opening and the relation between the two angles is made to be theta1>theta2 by curving the sub-chamber jet. CONSTITUTION:A sub-chamber jet 3 is so curved that the angle between the axis of the sub-chamber jet 3 connecting the main combustion chamber 1 and sub-combustion chamber 3 and the plane perpendicular to the axis of cylinder A- A is theta1 at the end of the opening of the main combustion chamber 1 and theta2 at the end of the opening of the sub-combustion chamber 2 so that theta1>theta2, and the opening of said jet 3 is located closer to the center of the cylinder. This arrangement makes it possible to increase the swirling radius rs of a jet stream J, thereby to achieve better combustion in the sub-combustion chamber 2 and also to reduce the flame cooling by the wall of the main combustion chamber 1 and to prevent the increase in gas pressures. And the increased jet stream penetration promotes the combustion in the main combustion chamber 1 to reduce the fuel consumption by the engine, smoke emissions, noise, and heat loss.
