Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the output with respect to the distance to an object to be measured stably, by performing simple computation and processing of the output of a semiconductor optical position detecting element. CONSTITUTION:A light source 8 which projects a light beam and a light converging optical system 9 which receives the reflected light from the object to be measured are provided so that they are separated by a base line length A. The optical axes of the light beam and the optical system 9 are parallel to each other. The light receiving surface of the semiconductor optical position detecting element 10 is located in a focus plane which is perpendicular to the optical axis of the optical system 9, and fixed so that the optical axis is positioned between detecting electrodes. The output currents of the electrodes of the detecting element 10 are connected to a computing part 11, and the computed result is outputted or displayed through an output circuit 12.
