Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the operation and productivity of a hardening work, by forming a film whose laser beam absorption factor is high, on the part to be hardened, when performing the hardening treatment by means of irradiation of a laser beam.
CONSTITUTION: A member 12 to be hardened is placed on a moving base 11, and on its base, a nozzle 14 provided with a condensing lens 13 is placed. In this state, an oxide film or a carbide film whose laser beam absorption factor is high is formed on the surface of the member 12 to be hardened, by irradiating a laser beam 15 by comparatively small energy density, blowing gas such as gaseous oxygen, air, gaseous carbonic acid, etc. into the nozzle 14. Subsequently, it is heated to a temperature exceeding a transformation point by irraidating a laser beam whose energy density is high, the irradiation point of the laser beam is moved by moving the moving base 11, and the previous heating part is self- cooled and hardened. It is possible to harden by a laser beam with excellent efficiency, owing to the laser beam absorption film.
