PURPOSE:To set the distance between a preceding material and a succeeding one to the prescribed value, by detecting a rolling speed and a transferring speed of the rolling member and setting the speed of the succeeding material at negative or positive state. CONSTITUTION:A moving quantity of a preceding material 2-2 from a detector 5-1 is calculated from a pattern of transferring speed when the tail end of the material 2-2 passes through the detector 5-1. Successively, the time of passing through of the tail end of the material 2-2 between the detector 5-1 and a rolling mill 1-2 is calculated. Next, the moving quantity of the material 2-2 and the time of passing of the front end of a succeeding material 2-1 through the rolling mill 1-2 are calculated when the material 2-1 reaches the detector 5-1. Next, an oscillatiating action to set transferring speeds VF and VR alternately by a commanding signal is outputted, when the time corresponding to the distance between the materials 2-1 and 2-2 is not larger than the time corresponding to the previously set desired distance, and further the transferring speed VC is set when the former time is larger. Thus the distance between the preceding material and the succeeding one is easily controlled by setting the oscillating action.
