Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a carrier excellent in purifying capacity and physical properties by a method an activated alumina type catalyst carrier is impregnated with an aqueous magnesium salt solution and the impregnated carrier is baked at a temp. initiating formation of α-alumina or more.
CONSTITUTION: As the carrier of an α-alumina type catalyst for purifying an automobile exhaust gas, an activated alumina type carrier is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt such as magnesium nitrate or magnesium acetate to contain, on the basis of a total amount of the carrier, 5W15wt% magnesium salt as MgO in the carrier and the resulting impregnated carrier is baked at a temp. initiating formation of α-alumina or more to convert said carrier to α-alumina. By this method, the excellent carrier having characteristics of an α-alumina type catalyst in purifying capacity and characteristics of activated alumina type in physical properties is obtained.
