Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress side reaction and obtain a catalyst free from degradation in activity by depositing a basic reagent and a thermally decomposable copper salt on a carrier and calcining it as catalyst for oxyhalogenation.
CONSTITUTION: As a catalyst used for oxyhalogenation, particularly oxychlorination of ethylene, a basic reagent such as hydroxide of alkali metals and a thermally decomposable copper salt such as copper nitrate, or cuprammonium hydroxide are deposited on a carrier of alumina, silica or the like, after which these are calcined. The resultant catalyst suppresses side reaction, particularly, combustion reaction, considerably and is virtually free from degradation in activity.
