Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a serodiagnostic latex not undergoing a nonspecific coagulation reaction, by copolymerizing styrene with a mono(meth)acrylate of a (poly)alkylene oxide in water in the presence of submicroscopic silica particles.
CONSTITUTION: Titled latex is obtained by copolymerizing (A) 100pts.wt. styrene with 0.1W70pts.wt. (meth)acrylate of the formula, wherein R1W2 are each H or CH3, R3 is H or an alkyl and n=1W100, e.g., polyethylene glycol mono(meth)acrylate, in water in the presence of 0.01W10wt% submicroscopic silica particles, e.g., Aerosil (trade name) by use of a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator, e.g., potassium persulfate. This latex is sensitized with an antigen or an antibody, and the presence or absence of the corresponding antibody or antigen is judged from coagulation reaction.
EFFECT: The latex thus produced has an average particle size of 0.05W2μ and an extremely uniform particle size.
