Abstract
PURPOSE: To form cellulose gel particles suitable as a filter medium used in, for example, gel filtration, by adding a coagulant, under agitation, to a dispersion containing dispersed drops of a cellulose solution and thereby coagulating the drops into gel.
CONSTITUTION: 1pt.wt. cellulose (e.g., regenerated cellulose) is mixed, under agitation, with about 15W50pts.wt. dimethyl solfoxide (DMSO) and about 0.8W 10pts.wt. paraformaldehyde at about 80W130°C. The resulting cellulose solution is dispersed in a dispersion medium (e.g., liquid unreactive with the cellulose solution and immiscible with DMSO, e.g., liquid paraffin). Then, a coagulant (e.g., ethyl acetate, dimethyl-dichlorosilane) is added, under agitation, to the above-produced dispersion to coagulate the drops of the cellulose solution. If necessary, the regeneration of the cellulose is brought to completion by use of hot water, about 50W95°C and then the coagulated particles are separated and washed to obtain cellulose gel particles.
