Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform the positioning highly accurately by setting the detecting optical axes of two optical detecting devices so that said axes are cut at the different surface positions of the cylindrical body in positioning the cylindrical body having recessed parts on the outer surface. CONSTITUTION:The roll of a rooling mill having bearings which are generally called chocks is positioned at a specified height. In general, a plurality of key ways 41a having a concave cross section are provided in the outer surface of a roll neck part 4a. The horizontal optical axis X1 is provided by a pair of light emitting and receiving devices. An edge A of the key way is positioned directly over a center P of a roll shaft. When the height of neck part 4a cuts the optical axis, the optical axis X2 is determined so that it has a point of contact to the left of the other edge B of the key way. The angle between X1 and X2 is recommended to be larger than theta. The optical axis can be X'2. When either of these optical axes is cut off by the neck part 4a, it is judged that the positioning at the specified height is obtained.
