Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable spherical cutting by the cutting edge of the obliquely cut surface of a ball-end mill for cutting a metal mold or the like and also enable the cutting of a shoulder by the peripheral cutting edge of an upwardly cut groove. CONSTITUTION:The cutting part 2 of a ball-end mill is shaped in a rod of elliptic cross section. One side surface along the minor axis of the elliptic the cross section is located almost on the axis 3 of the shank 1 of the mill. The cutting part 2 is obliquely cut off from the side surface at an angle of theta to the minor axis. An obliquely cut surface 4 provided as a result of the oblique cutting-off, looks almost circular viewing perpendicularly to the surface. An upwardly cut groove 5 for cutting a shoulder is provided on the opposite side surface on the minor axis so that the groove 5 extends in the axial direction of the mill. The edge on the groove 5 is used as a peripheral cutting edge 6. A chamfered section 7 is provided opposite the upwardly cut groove 5 so that the section 7 has no cutting edges. Two arc-shaped cutting edges 8, 9 are thus produced separately. A spherical surface and the shoulder subsequent thereto are cut by these arc-shaped cutting edges 8, 9.
