Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for an external driving power source by transducing optical energy into electric energy through a photoelectromotive film, and driving a voltage-controlled optical switch by using the electric energy. CONSTITUTION:On a substrate 1, an optical waveguide 2 and a voltage-controlled optical switch 6 are formed. Then, light passed through an optical waveguide 2-2 is switched to one of two optical waveguides 2-2 and 2-4 in accordance with a potential difference between electrodes 8-1 and 8-2. Light passed through an optical waveguide 2-3 is the same. For this purpose, photoelectromotive force films 11-1 and 11-2 are provided in windows 10-1 and 10-2 which pierce an electric insulating layer 9 and an optical buffer layer 7 and then reaches the substrate 1 on optical waveguides 2-4 and 2-5, and their outputs are supplied to optical switches 6-2 and 6-1 through electrodes 8-3 and 8-4, and 8-1 and 8-2. Consequently, when light 3 having constant power is inputted, intermittent pulse light beams 12-2 and 12-4 are obtained at constant intervals of time.
