Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a magnetic recording medium by a longitudinal sputtering method which can control the composition ratio of alloy easily. CONSTITUTION:The surface 1a of a base plate 1 and the surface 2a of an alloy target 2 are arranged longitudinally, and an alloy target 2 is composed of a metallic body 3 made of transition metal, a metallic piece 4 made of rare earth metal, and a locking means which consists of a recessed part 6 for metal-piece fitting formed in the surface 3a of the metallic body 3 and a detaining plate 7 detains the metallic piece 4 to be fitted in the recessed part from the surface 3a of the metallic body 3 and locks the metallic piece on the surface side of the metallic body. Then, the base plate 1 arranged at an anode side is coverred with a thin film of magnetic alloy from the said alloy target arranged at a cathode side by a cathode sputtering method.
