PURPOSE:To manufacture a stick steel plate having no porous defect without increasing load to rolling mill by subjecting the widthwise center of a material to be rolled to a cooling treatment within a specific range in such a way as to produce a temperature difference between the center and the surface layer in the manufacture of a thick steel plate by rolling. CONSTITUTION:In the manufacture of a thick steel plate of a thickness of 120mm., the widthwise center of a material to be rolled is subjected to a cooling treatment within the range of 2H-0.5H(where H is the thickness of slab at the beginning of cooling and B is the width of slab) in such a way as to produce a temperature difference between the center and the surface layer of the material to be rolled, and then the material is rolled. Or, after the cooling treatment, the draft of the material to be rolled in the initial rolling process is set to a rolling shape ratio of about 0.34 or more, and then the material is rolled. Thus, the porous defect of the thick steel plate can be effectively eliminated without increasing loads to rolling mill.
