PURPOSE:To make possible a large broadside reduction without damaging the sectional shape of the slab, and to improve the producibility, by successively carrying out the rolling of the end face of the slab using the vertical rolls provided with respectively the concave bottom, the convex bottom, and the flat bottom calibers, and then, by carrying out the rolling of upper and lower surfaces of the slab using the horizontal roll. CONSTITUTION:The rolling reduction of 120mm is given to the slab using the vertical roll 12 provided with the caliber 11 possessing a circular arc type concave bottom 11a. The concave bottom 11a is formed so as to make the breadth X to be the same size as the breadth of the slab. At the second pass, the rolling reduction of 100mm is given to the slab using the vertical roll 14 provided with the caliber 13 possessing the circular arc type convex bottom 13a. By thus pushing the middle part of the thickness, the middle part of the breadth receives a high rolling reduction. At the third pass, the rolling reduction of 140mm is given to the slab using the vertical roll 16 provided with the caliber 15 possessing the flat bottom 15a.
