PURPOSE:To enable to form the solid state color image pickup element, having a built-in color separation mechanism, using a semiconductor process only by a method wherein the depth of diffusion of the floating diffusion layer on the adjoining photo detecting diodes is varied each other. CONSTITUTION:A photo-detecting diode row 10, which is placed on a solid state image pickup element substrate 1, is formed in such a manner that a deep floating diffusion layer 2 and a shallow floating diffusion layer 3 are arranged alternately. In the solid state image pickup element which was formed according to this constitution, as red light is not fully absorbed in the layer 3, and on the contrary, blue light is absorbed in the vicinity of the surface of the layer 2, the quantity of charge corresponding to the quantity of red color is accumulated in the layer 2, and the quantity of charge corresponding to the quantity of blue color is accumulated in the layer 2. Accordingly, if the output of a shift registor is separated into a signal corresponding to the layer 2 and a signal corresponding to the layer 3 using a synchronizing signal, a red signal and a blue signal can be obtained separately. Besides, electric signal, consisting of a green signal in which some red signal and blue signal are added, can be obtained by adding a floating diffusion layer of intermediate depth to the above.
