Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered Fe alloy with superior heat and wear resistances for each valve seat of an internal combustion engine using lead-free gasoline by specifying the composition and structure of a steel contg. C, Cu, S, Cr, Mo and V.
CONSTITUTION: This alloy has a composition consisting of, by wt., 0.4W1.5% C, 0.5W9.5% Cu, 0.3W4.0% S, one or more among 0.5W5.0% Cr, 0.5W5.0% Mo and 0.5W3.0% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and a structure contg. sulfide and carbide phases with high adhesion to the matrix dispersed uniformly in the grain boundaries of the matrix. S combines with Fe, disperses in the grain boundaries of the matrix, forms the sulfide phase with high adhesion to the matrix, and provides superior self-lubricity and machinability to the alloy. Cr, Mo or V is partially solubilized in the matrix to enhance the oxidation resistance, and most of the remainder combines with C, forms a carbide phase dispersing uniformly in the matrix, and enhances the heat and wear resistnces furthermore.
