Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the position of welding boundary exactly from a position signal of a probe and abrupt change signal of impedance of a flaw detecting apparatus by scanning the surface of a weld zone with a detecting probe of an eddy current flaw detector.
CONSTITUTION: A search coil 3b of a detecting probe 3 that consists of a ferrite rod 3a and a search coil 3b is set to a transmitter 8. The probe 3 is shifted to a weld zone. When the probe 3 arrives at the welding boundary, load of the search coil 3b changes abruptly. Then, the gain of the transmitting loop changes to form a lag in peak value of transmitting waveform. The change of this envelope is detected by an eddy current flaw detector 6. At the same time, the position of the detecting probe 3 in X-direction is detected by a position indicator 4. The position of welding boundary is detected from the two signals.
