Abstract

PURPOSE: After being hydrolyzed in a proton acid, chitin is dissolved in an aprotonic polar solvent containing a metal halide to prepare the titled dope of equalized molecular weight and high stability.
CONSTITUTION: 2W8pts.wt. of chitin is hydrolyzed in 100pts. of a proton acid such as a lower fatty acid, its halide or mineral acid, e.g., formic acid, at room or lower temperature, preferably under stirring until the viscosity becomes 300W200P. Then, a nonsolvent such as water is added thereto to precipitate low-molecular-weight chitin. The collected low-molecular-weight chitin is dissolved in an aproton polar solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide containing 3W8wt% metal halide such as lithium chloride so that the concentration of chitin becomes less than 10wt%.
