Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled crystals with a low degree of discoloration having improved transparency by simple operations, by purifying crude bisphenol A prepared from phenol and acetone in the presence of an acidic catalyst by using Na2S2O4 in a molten state in contact with water.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol is reacted with acetone in the presence of an acidic catalyst to give crude bisphenol A, which is in a molten state brought into contact with water under ordinary pressure at 95°C or above in the presence of Na2S2O4 (sodium dithionite) and purified. The resultant mixture is then cooled to 95°C or below at ordinary pressure to deposit bisphenol A (abbreviated to BPA) and give crystals of BPA with a low degree of discoloration. The amount of water to be used for the contact treatment is 1W5pts.wt. based on BPA. The amount of Na2S2O4 is 0.1W1pt.wt. based on BPA.
USE: A raw material for polycarbonate, epoxy resins, etc.
