Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, by treating a raw phenol by a specific method to prevent the deterioration of a catalytic activity previously, and reacting the treated phenol with acetone in the presence of a sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin catalyst modified with a compound having a mercapto group.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol is reacted with acetone in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin modified wih a compound having a mercapto group, e.g. a mercaptoalkylamine, to prepare bisphenol A. In the process, the phenol to be used as a raw material to previously brought into contact with the sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin preferably at 50W100°C for 0.2W10hr at a space velocity of 1W10hr-1.
EFFECT: The catalytic life can be prolonged.
