Abstract
PURPOSE:To decompose water inexpensively and easily and to produce hdrogen and oxygen by irradiating an alkaline mixed soln. consisting chiefly of water and a lower alcohol with light in the presence of a photosensitizing catalyst and a thermochemical reaction catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A mixed soln. consisting of water and a lower primary alcohol such as methanol in about 5:95-95:5 by vol. is adjusted to about 7-15pH by adding an alkali aid such as sodium hydroxide. After adding a photosensitizing catalyst such as titanium oxide and a thermochemical reaction catalyst such as Raney nickel to said soln., the soln. is irradiated with light such as natural light, visible light or ultraviolet light having about 4,000-1,000Angstrom wavelengths to decompose the water.
