Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose water efficiently without using thermal energy, by adding aqueous ammonia and iodine to water under irradiation of ultraviolet light to decompose the water photochemically.
CONSTITUTION: An assistant, e.g. aqueous ammonia, is added to water under irradiation of natural light, visible light or ultraviolet light at a wavelength near 400W100nm to adjust pH to 7W15, and iodine is then reacted with the ammonia group to form an iodine compound, e.g. ammonium iodide. The water molecule is dissociated with the light energy due to the light absorption with the iodine compound and the photochemical catalysis thereof to generate hydrogen iodine and oxygen. The oxygen and the hydrogen iodide are then separated to irradiate the hydrogen iodide with light, and the hydrogen iodide is separated into iodine and hydrogen. The hydrogen is passed through a porous membrane, etc. and recovered. The iodine is then recovered and reused for the reaction.
