Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the overall converting efficiency of the solar energy in producing hydrogen and oxygen by decomposing water with an ultraviolet light region in the solar energy, by recovering the energy of the infrared light region as heat. CONSTITUTION:Water is introduced from an inlet 4 into a photochemical reactor 1 having a fixed bed 2 of a photochemical reaction catalyst and then discharged from an outlet 4' by a pump 12. In the process, sunlight 6 is irradiated from a light transmitting window 5 at the top of the photochemical reactor 1, and the water is decomposed into oxygen and hyrogen by the catalytic bed 2. The resultant oxygen and hydrogen are separated in a separator 9 and utilized respectively as energy sources. In this case, the ultraviolet light region of the sunlight 6 is used for decomposing the water, and the infrared light region in the sunlight 6 is used to heat the water simultaneously. The water except the decomposed part is circulated through a regenerator 11, stored, and taken out of a conduit 14 as warm water if necessary for use.
