Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate number of recording tracks on a tape automatically, by providing a function writing a track number discriminating mark on the magnetic tape and a function detecting and discriminating the number of tracks. CONSTITUTION:When a write instruction is inputted from an upper-order device 12, a system control section 10 sets the system to a write-mode. Then, a discrimination mark recording track is selected, the track number is checked, and if the number of track is 8, an L2 section is erased, the write-in track is selected and data write-in is started. On the other hand, if the track number is 4, a track number discriminating mark 23 is recorded on the L2 section on a tape. When a read instruction is inputted from the device 12, the control section 10 sets the mode to read-mode, selects a track where the mark 23 is recorded, and when the formatter 9 detects a discriminating mark code, data are read out. Thus, the number of recording tracks can automatically be discriminated.
