Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate the discrimination of the recording density of a recorded tape and to enable the information processing of tapes differing in recording density by providing the functions for recording, and reproducing and detecting recording-density discrimination marks. CONSTITUTION:In accordance with a low-density specifying instruction from a host device, a control part 17 places a recording/reproducing formatter 15 in erasure mode to erase data in a section L2 on a tape 1, and a hole sensor 18 detects an LP hole 3 and then selects a specified track to record data. In accordance with a high-density specifying instruction, on the other hand, a head 6 is used to record a recording-density discrimination mark 4 with length (l) in a section L2. Then, the mark 4 is reproduced by a head 7 and when the circuit 15 detects the (n) bits of the discrimination code, the hole sensor 18 detects the LP hole 3 and then selects a specified track to record data. When the (n) bits of the code are not detected, on the other hand, the tape 1 is rewound until a BOT hole 2a and the mark 4 is recorded again and then reproduced.
