Abstract

PURPOSE:To utilize a magnetic tape effectively by detecting an effective track in a block if the block is erroneous block on the magnetic tape, and recording data on only the track. CONSTITUTION:A determination and holding control circuit 20 for an effective track receives recorded data on a magnetic tape 10 read by a reading head 101 through a demodulating circuit 103, and a reproduction checking circuit 106 and an error-track detecting and holding circuit 107 detect whether any data block on the tape 10 has an error or not. An effective-track data constituting circuit 30 is connected to the circuit 20 to constitute data so that the data is recorded in an effective track which has no error in a data block including an error track. An ineffective-track masking circuit 40 receives the outputs of the circuits 20 and 30 to control a driving circuit 1081 which drives a writing head 108 for the medium 10 so that the data is recorded on only the effective track. Thus, storage capacity per reel of tape is increased.
