Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate the discrimination of the use of a track of a recorded tape, and to enable information processing of a tape differing in track use state, by providing the functions of recording, and reproducing and detecting discrimination code marks for track use. CONSTITUTION:In accordance with a recording instruction from a host device, a control part 17 records a discrimination code mark 4 for track use having length (l) in a section L2 of a 1/4 inch tape 1 by using a head 6, and then reproduces the mark 4 by a head 7; when a recording/reproducing formatter 15 detects (n) bits of the code, data from the track 1 are recorded after a hole sensor 18 detects an LP hole 3. When the (n) bits of the code are not detected, the tape 1 is rewound until a BOT hole 2a and the mark 4 is recorded again. In accordance with a reproduction instruction from the host device, the control part 7 detects the mark 4 to place the circuit 15 in serpentine mode and when the mark 4 is not detected, the circuit 15 is put in separate mode, thereby reproducing data.
