Abstract

PURPOSE:To control dephosphorization without causing the decrease or the like in the yield of tapping owing to generation of slopping by measuring the slag level formed in a converter, and controlling the height of a lance in accordance with the slag level. CONSTITUTION:In a refining method for converters for refining molten steel by inserting a lance through the opening in the upper part of the converter and blowing gaseous O2 through the lance, a rangefinder such as microwave rangefinder is installed through the opening in the upper part of the converter by directing its detection direction toward the melt level of the slag in the converter. The rangefinder measures slag levels continuously during blowing and displays the results of the measurement in, for example, a control room. The operator controls the relative positions of the lance with the slag level in accordance with the predetermined standard pattern of the distance between the lance and the slag level.
