Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the optical loss of an optical switch and to facilitate its manufacture by coupling light from the branch path of an Y-shaped optical branch part as waveguide light to an optical deflection part and setting the branch angle of the optical branch part double as great as a Bragg angle. CONSTITUTION:At both the sides of the branch part of an Y-shaped waveguide 25 formed on a substrate 24, electrodes 26A and 26B are formed, and the branch angle of branch paths 25B and 25C is set double as great as a Bragg angle. On the substrate 24 of an optical polarization part B, on the other hand, a comb- shaped electrode ultrasonic oscillator (IDT)19 is provided so that branched light beams Q1 and Q2 cross a propagating beam 21 at points (a) and (b) with the Bragg angle. Then, the IDT19 is varied within a prescribed range to deflect the Bragg-diffracted light beams R1 and R2 of the branched light beams Q1 and Q2, and the electrodes 26A and 26B of the optical branch part A are controlled selectively to switch prescribed optical data.
