Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the starting material for the manufacturing of an optical fiber by V.A.D process, having increased bonding area of the glass fine particles and improved bond strength, by forming the end of the starting material in a nearly similar shape to the grown shape of the preform. CONSTITUTION:The end of a starting material 10, 12 or 14 made of quartz, etc. is formed in the shape of a sphere 11, a hemisphere 13 or flame 15. The outer diameter D of the formed part 11, 13 or a 15 is made to almost coincide with the outer diameter of the torch supplying the raw material gas. Furthermore, the end shape is designed to be nearly similar shape to the end shape of the preform growing under stationary state. Accordingly, the flow of the raw material gas supplied from the torch reaches the stationary state rapidly after the starting up.
