Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material causing no scattering loss after drawing by putting core glass into a high purity quartz pipe, heating them while feeding a clean gas into the gap been them, and melting and uniting them. CONSTITUTION:Cleaned core glass 1 is put into quartz pipe 2 obtd. by depositing high purity quartz glass or pure quartz pipe 2, and they are arranged coaxially with spacer 5. While feeding clean gas 3 such as N2 or Ar into the gap between them, they are heated at a temp. below the softening point of glass 1 with high temp. flame 4 from the outside of pipe 2, whereby constituents of the outside of glass 1 and the inside of pipe 2 are volatilized, and foreign matter and surface flaws are removed to clean and flatten glass 1 and pipe 2. The feed of gas 3 is then stopped, and by further raising the temp., glass 1 and pipe 2 are melted and united.
