Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain stainless steel of 12W20% content of Cr and ≤0.06% content of C by manufacturing molten metal of initial specific contents of Cr and C, blowing a gaseous mixture of O2 and Ar into molten steel through a refractory lance to decarburize the same and adding low carbon ferrochromium base metal.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal of 6W10% initial content of Cr and ≤0.1% content of C is manufactured in a high frequency induction furnace. A gaseous mixture of O2 and Ar is blown through a refractory lance into this molten metal, whereby it is decarburized to ≤0.05% content of C. Thereafter, low carbon ferrochromium base metal is added to produce the steel. In this way, the stainless steel of 12W20% content of Cr and ≤0.06% content of C is produced at a reduced cost.
